The Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (ftw.) was established in 1998 as a pilot organisation under the Austrian government´s Kplus Competence Centers Program. The founding partners were departments from Vienna University of Technology, several well-known telecommunications companies - both network operators and equipment manufacturers - some smaller enterprises, the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf and the Association of the Electrotechnical and Electronics Industry. Its goal is to bring together academia and industry to carry out application-oriented research in one of the central scientific fields of tomorrow´s information society.
Telecommunications is a fascinating, fast paced industry that influences every aspect of our daily life like normal voice phone calls, connectivity to the Internet, satellite communications, surfing the web, fax transmissions, video conferencing, high speed data communications, and cable tv.

This site is devoted to municipal broadband projects worldwide that are funded or supported by cities and towns, especially those projects that incorporate wireless technologies. These range from downtown hot-zones & city- and county-wide wireless broadband networks, to country-wide deployments. Although we often use the word “city," rural municipalities receive equal coverage, because they are leading the fight for affordable, fast, universal access to the Internet. We also cover the products, technologies, and standards that comprise public broadband networks, and the organizations that design, install, and mainta in them.
