In general Session Layer is level five of the seven level OSI model. It responds to service requests from the Presentation Layer and issues service requests to the Transport Layer
Posted by mr_eighty

The session layer deals with initiating and terminating network connections. It provides instructions to connect, authenticate (optionally), and disconnect from a network resource. Common examples are the login part of a Telnet or SQL session (not the actual data movement) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) functions. The actual movement of the data is handled by the lower layers.
