Why we use low frequencies for uplink & high frequencies for downlink, eg in GSM-900 ?

uplink is information travelling from mobile to BTS and downlink is information travelling from BTS to mobile. Power required to transmit low frequency will be less as compared to power required for transmitting higher frequecy for the same distance and information. Power consumption in mobile will be less for transmitting low frequency whereas BTS has continous power source from mains and hence transmitting on higher frequecy( for downlink) which requires more power makes system more viable.
