Its in short term LAPD – Link Access Procedure D channel, the linklayer defined for ISDN, provides
retransmission, error detection. E1 – the physical layer most often used for ISDN, 30 traffic channels and one signaling channel all of 64kbps.

LAPD stands for Link access procedure(Data) used by abis.

Because of specific nature of signalling and control information passing over E1 between bsc and bts thats why different type of interfaces are required.
