G.729 is a high complexity algorithm, and G.729A (also known as G.729 Annex-A) is a medium complexity variant of G.729 with slightly lower voice quality. All platforms that support G.729 also support G.729A.

G.729 is compression standard and G.729a is the extension of G.729.
And both provide different compressing rates.

G.729 is an audio data compression algo for voice that compresses voice audio in chunks for 10 millisecond. G.729 does coding for speech at 8 kbps But G.729 a is extension of G.729 which provide 6.4 kbps and 11.8 kbps.
