The Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (ftw.) was established in 1998 as a pilot organisation under the Austrian government´s Kplus Competence Centers Program. The founding partners were departments from Vienna University of Technology, several well-known telecommunications companies - both network operators and equipment manufacturers - some smaller enterprises, the Austrian Research Center Seibersdorf and the Association of the Electrotechnical and Electronics Industry. Its goal is to bring together academia and industry to carry out application-oriented research in one of the central scientific fields of tomorrow´s information society.
