Wataniya Telecom Maldives was issued a licence as the new mobile phone operator in February 2005. We were selected after a bidding process with three other companies. All the bidders proposed competitive tariffs, but we are investing heavily to deliver new services in the fastest possible time. Launched in 1999, Wataniya Telecom is already a leading mobile phone operator in the Middle East and North Africa. We currently serve a total of more than three million customers in Kuwait, Tunisia, Iraq, Algeria and Saudi Arabia. So you can be sure we offer quality services at value-for-money prices. Of course, the Maldives proves a unique challenge with its scattered islands and population. But based on the expertise gained from our existing operations, we are confident of delivering a great service across the whole country.
Since beginning operations in 1988 as the national telecommunications carrier of the Maldives, Dhiraagu has rapidly built a sound, financially strong business based on a commitment to providing innovative products and services and a philosophy that places high value on customer satisfaction. Dhiraagu today owns and operates a fully digital communications network reaching every inhabited island and tourist resort Maldives. Due to the geography of the country, the network backbone is primarily a microwave radio system using a combination of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy(PDH) technology. Service to the Southern Atolls is extended via satellite with a PDH microwave backbone network interconnecting the islands in the region. The network uses Signalling System 7 (SS7) enabling a host of new services to be introduced easily.

We have evolved from a first-generation analogue cellular system operator to the world's first provider of second-generation CDMA service, then to the 2.5-generation CDMA 2000 1x system operator, as well as the world's first commercialization of third-generation synchronized IMT-2000 system to the world's first company to commercialize (CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO). In 2006, SK Telecom also launched the world's first HSDPA service, which allows for video telephony via a mobile phone.
Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd (TSKL) was established in June 1990 as a joint venture company. The Joint venture came to an end on the 31 May 2001 and since then, TSKL has been operating as a company fully owned by the Government of Kiribati.
