The IP Multimedia Subsystem, IMS, is a functional architecture aimed at providing multimedia services by means of the Internet protocols. It was designed by the wireless standards body, 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). In its original formulation (3GPP R5) it was slated to provide “Internet Services” over GPRS. This vision was subsequently updated by 3GPP, 3GPP2 (3rd Generation Partnership Project 2) and TISPAN (Telecoms & Internet converged Services & Protocols for Advanced Networks) by providing requirements for support of networks other than GPRS such as Wireless LAN, CDMA2000 and Fixed line.

IMS was introduced in UMTS Release 5 and 6. In its first release it aimed at development and deployment of new services in mobile networks. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) extended IMS as “access agnostic”. The Telecoms & Internet converged Services & Protocols for Advanced Networks (TISPAN), a body of the ETSI later included a first release on IMS. TISPAN is now currently working on the second release which concentrates on video streaming services in the RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) subsystem. This will enable both IPTV and on-demand TV services to be delivered over the converged access network.

Most of the IMS protocols are standardized at the IETF (e.g. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)). TISPAN refers to IMS as “IMS Core” which is different from IMS as according to 3GPP. TISPAN also specifies several non IMS subsystems like Network Attachment Subsystem (NASS) and Resource Admission Control Subsystem (RACS). It is difficult to get a good picture of IMS as the architecture is still being defined.
