The third character in the configuration register can modify how the router loads the configuration file. The setting of 0x2142 causes the router to ignore the startup-config file in NVRAM (which is where the password is stored) and proceed without a configuration—as if the router were brand new or had its configuration erased.

This is a useful setting for those times when you do not know the password to enable the router and configure it. Perhaps you forgot the password; maybe you bought a used router, or maybe a student configured a password in a previous lab. Perhaps the previous admin quit, got fired, or was hit by a bus. In any event, we need the password to log in and make changes, so we need to bypass the existing password and change it to something we know. This process is called Password Recovery.
