On the Session Signaling Layer, the IMS uses these interworking components to control
interfacing between the cell Core Networks, the PSTN, and other networks. There
are several functions needed to accomplish this control.

Signaling Gateway (SGW) is an SS7/SIGTRAN signaling device to provide and
control SS7 signaling. The STP could act as an SGW.

Media Gateway Function (MGWF) interfaces one part of the transport to another.
Technically, this component lies in the lower Access/Transport Layer although it
must be controlled by the IMS.

Media Gateway Control Function (MGCF) receives SS7 requests to setup a call
(Initial Access Messages (IAM)) and uses that to direct the MGWF to direct and
interface the message.
Border Gateway Control Function (BGCF) decides if a call to the PSTN would be
cheaper from the local MGWF/MGCF or from the MGWF/MGCF in another IMS
network. If cheaper from another network, it will direct the call to that network.
