Many Wireless Access Point (WAP) vendors have added a configuration option which lets you disable broadcasting of the SSID.
SSID should always be on, because anybody can use Free internet and tap your secure data as well.

Becuase it basically provides authentication at wireless network.

SSID is basically a secret key which is needed when to want to join 802.11 network.
